ROBOTICS / RESEARCH NOTE

Autonomy, below the surface.

Why navigation, endurance and recovery matter as much as the robot itself.

Define the mission

An underwater vehicle should be evaluated against a specific task. Mapping, inspection and environmental observation each place different demands on sensors, navigation and the time spent in the water.

Plan for uncertainty

Marine environments change, and communication can be constrained. Mission planning includes what a system does when conditions change, when data is incomplete or when an operator needs it to return.

Measure the useful output

The value of a mission is often the information it produces. Data quality, interpretation and integration with the user’s workflow deserve the same attention as vehicle design.
